The International Evangelical Hospital was formally opened on the 8th June 1857. This was the first moment of its long history, begun thanks to the fervent wish of the Scottish Presbyterian, the Reformed Swiss, the Waldensian and the Anglican churches to assure their members of a sure refuge that would respect their religious views. The original name of the hospital was the Protestant Hospital and had only 11 beds.
The early years were very difficult, due both to financial and minority community problems. However, year after year, thanks to the efforts of the founders and benefactors, the hospital managed to meet its obligations and develop.
In 1867, the hospital moved to Salita Superiore San Rocchino. The Lutheran Church joined in the running of the hospital in 1869 and, in 1871 (with strict limitations), it began to accept non-protestant patients.
By Royal Decree, the hospital became a non-profit organisation in 1876. This was the turning point. The new status as a corporate body gave unexpected benefits and privileges. The hospital thrived and, in 1907 (50 years after being founded), it had 50 beds and up-to-date equipment. Enthusiastic progress continued right through the First World War.
1932 was a significant date. The original protestant evangelical roots remained but, by changing the name to the International Evangelical Hospital, its character was consolidated as an institute open to all the needy, regardless of religion, race or creed.
These happy times ended with the advent of the Second World War. Fewer patients and higher costs led to a financial crisis. Following severe bomb damage in 1942, the hospital was forced to close.
In spite of the seriousness of the situation, the members of the hospital Board remained undiscouraged and so, on the 25th March, 1946, this brave group re-opened the hospital and gave it a new start. It quickly recovered and progressed till, in 1957, the International Evangelical Hospital celebrated its first Centennial.
From then on, the hospital has continued to grow and develop. In 1969 it was classified as a local general hospital and, 10 years later, signed an important Protocol with the Ligurian Regional Government and formally became an integral part of the Regional Health Service.
